Roger Federer isn’t having it all easy at the hallowed grounds of Wimbledon this year. Consequently it’s making me a nervous wreck because despite the fact that he’s already beyond doubt the greatest player who has ever played the game, I still don’t want to watch him lose his most prized tournament, the one that means the most to him.
His win over Pete Sampras in 2001 signaled the passing of torch of sorts from one super champion to the next. Federer has stepped up to the plate since and turned out to be the greater athlete. He’s not some loose diamonds who only showed scattered brilliance. He broke every record, showed superb artistry in the courts, and remains an exemplary human being outside of them.
As I’m typing this, Roger is having a breeze against Arnaud Clement. I hope it keeps this way for now. At least until up to the U.S. Open this August.
