When this year’s French Open tennis championships started, no one would have predicted that the ladies who will fight to have her name on the champion’s cup would be someone who has never been there, nor have won any other Grand Slam title. But this Saturday, Australian Samantha Stosur and Italian Francesca Schiavone are onto the Rolland Garros finals, and I’m picking Sam Stosur to win this thing.
For one, she beat three former world no. 1s back to back, including the current no. 1 Serena Williams (the others are Justine Henin in the fourth round and Jelena Jankovic in the semis). As Andy Roddick would have put it, the other girls threw everything they’ve got, but Sam prevailed. They might have thrown her their Kohler kitchen sink but Sam’s powerful serves and newfound fitness may have proven to be the winning factor. A possibly bitter Jankovic even said that it felt like she was playing a man (something they always say about Serena, methinks). Anyway, Sam Stosur for the win, s’il vous plait.
