TB versus VD

April 17, 2010

I always get a chuckle with those abbreviations. True Blood [TB] and (The) Vampire  Diaries [VD] are two of the hottest shows on TV these days. They’re both vampire stories, obviously, and they both abbreviate into communicable diseases. Ok, maybe that’s not too funny. But how gratuitous these shows are becoming is. I mean, I get what’s True Blood trying to do by flashing too much flesh and intimate scenes (well, partly to be controversial and get the audiences’ attention), and of I’m not complaining on seeing a shirtless Paul Wesley doing exercises on a pull up bar, but there are times when those scenes are plainly not needed that it just seems like exploitation and an insult to the TV watcher’s intelligence. I admit, maybe that’s taking it too seriously. These shows rarely need to be. They’re fluff and meant to be enjoyed that way. I don’t mean to say they’re written lousily. Truth be told, these two shows are quite written well and are very engaging. If you’re into vampire stories, that is.
