Bring On the Fandom

December 4, 2008

Anybody who has ever visited this blog in more than one occasion would know that I love movies and TV shows. I’ve made a declaration in my other blog that someday, I hope to do some writing for such media.

I love fiction. Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve been fascinated by stories -  read, watched, or listened to. I’m not sure about writing fiction, though. To me, it’s kind of scary. The way I see myself writing fiction, it could either give away a lot of who I am or make people think that I am exactly what I write.

Anyway, I think by researching my favorite TV shows, I may have unwittingly entered total geek territory. But that’s mostly because The X-Files and Buffy the Vampire Slayer have such cult following, yes up until this day, and the mythology of both shows are very discussion-worthy.

I’m not into fan fiction, though. I may change my mind in the future but I saw a few Mulder-Scully stories out there and they make me want to curl in one corner and cry. I’m sure there are legitimately good writers of fanfic out there. Unfortunately, I stumbled into a few written for the sole purpose of “resolving” the good ol’ years of sexual tension between Mulder and Scully and I tell you these fans don’t know the meaning of the word subtlety.

I learned a new word today, though - fanwank. It sounds nasty, but what it really means is that a fan provides his or her own rationalization to a missing part of the story as shown (or not shown) on screen. See a more detailed explanation below:

In short, fanwank is when a fan goes, “This development in canon makes no sense. However, it would make sense if only they had said, done, or suggested this other thing, which they didn’t, but probably should, would, or could have.” If enough people like and perpetuate a given fanwank, it can become fanon. Usually this is a relatively harmless activity designed to make the fan feel better about things, hence the name.

Don’t you just love how fluid language is? I do. Next time, I’ll list some more Internet lingo. IMHO (that’s in my humble opinion for you), slang’s not too bad (at least the nonvulgar variety) as long as you use them at the right place and the right time.

Do you see it? The big smiley face? (Two planets aligned and the crescent moon below.)

It’s so nice. I saw it after laughing hysterically at something I’m reading online.

Get Physical

I just realized that it has been two years since I stopped going to the gym. Now that I’m able to go play badminton more frequently (at most three times a week), I kinda miss it. I haven’t felt much better than when I was very much physically active - I used to have the gym and badminton (regularly), and even tennis and swimming for a while. When I started to slack, I also started to gain weight and feel too sluggish to wake up early and give time for those activities. And as always, the wake up call would be when I start feeling too heavy and lethargic, when my clothes start to get too small for me, and when my blood pressure tends to go up with very little “provocation.” This would be a good new-year resolution. It’s not as if I’ll start to take alli if I can’t exercise.
