Rafa Won Again, You Know

April 28, 2008

Last night was the finals of the ATP Masters Series Monte Carlo, featuring the top 2 tennis players in the world. For the third straight year, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal met in the final of this event; for the fourth straight year, Rafa emerged the winner. I was watching the live scores online and even then was bating my breath when Roger broke Rafa’s serve in the first set, only for Rafa to break back in the next game and take the set 7-5. Second set, I thought Roger’s got a good chance when he was up 4-0, but in a flash the scoreboard showed a leveled 4-4 score. Rafa eventually won 7-5 7-5.

Considering TheFed’s form of late, it seems to be a good game nevertheless. Other players can barely take 4 games when playing Nadal, who just proved again that he is the undisputed King of Clay. Quite fittingly, Federer’s postmatch interview is highlighted by two words - "You know." Yes Fed, I know.

Yup! I know also. And I take it that YOU are a Federer fan. But what can we do? (what can Federer do?) If it’s any indication of what’s gonna happen at Roland Garros this year (where Rafa aims for a 4-bagger), then I personally will not watch the French Open. And I hope that Federer could still defend his Wimbledon (his 6th consecutive) and US Open (his 5th consecutive) titles this year and, in the least, tie Sampras’ record of 14 grand slam titles.

andre agassi, I could only hope that Higueras is going to make a difference in Federer’s game. I still have high hopes for the French. If Fed wins this, and this year may be his one good chance, then a career Grand Slam may be enough to give up the no.1 spot. Wimbledon and the USO are still Fed’s to lose, and surpassing Sampras’ GS title will ultimately crown him “The Greatest Ever.” I hope these will all happen this year.

Zarine, I hope Federer surpasses Pete Sampras…and I hope he wins even just one French OPen. Hopefully this year…
