Un-Shifting Sands

March 9, 2008

There’s a harvest each Saturday night

At the bars filled with perfume and hitching a ride

A place you can stand for one night and get gone…

In these deep city lights

Girl could get lost tonight

I’m finding every reason to be gone

Nothing here to hold on to

Could I hold you?

Calling out, somebody save me

I feel like I’m fading away

Sara Bareilles - City (album: Little Voice)

A friend noted that I’m bored. Out of my mind, I say. Routine is killing me and I can’t remember the last time I acted foolish enough to have people talk about how, well, foolish, I am (unless I’m just oblivious to what’s really happening). This reminds me of onyxx’s poem, which I believe should be published somewhere other than her blog - have people pay to read it.

Call it pathetic but isn’t it true that you only notice how stagnant you are when you see people around you moving about, albeit aimlessly at times? There’s this weird feeling I get sometimes when I’m in a middle of a traffic situation: when the other vehicles start moving forward and the one I’m in doesn’t, my head would spin a bit and I’ll feel as if we’re actually moving backward. I cannot explain my current state any better than that.

Brooke White - American Idol

March 8, 2008

Now that the Top 12 has been chosen, it’s time for me to name my true favorite. As everybody’s saying, this is pretty much becoming "the David Archuleta show,"  and I like the kid, I do. I believe he’s got what it takes to go all the way.

The truth is, if I have to cast my vote, I’ll give it to Brooke White. I won’t be surprised if she won’t make the top 3, admittedly she doesn’t quite have the pipes of Carly or even Ramielle and Syesha, and she’s not at all that glamorous to be imagined under the confetti and glitters that will rain at the Kodak Theater during the finals. But I give her my vote for singing, for the past 4 weeks, the type of songs that are otherwise not singing competition material, but she did them so beautifully and heartfelt, sometimes with her on a keyboard or a guitar. I don’t mind the lack of range. I like it more that she showcases her strengths well.

Tomato, Tomayto

March 6, 2008

I have high respect for Alanis Morissette, but up until now I can’t spell her name right. I always, and I mean always, have to search which letters of her surname come in double. A shame when I call myself a Jagged Little Pill fanatic. My college roommate hated the angst, while I lapped it up. That’s the soundtrack of my generation right there. For the kids who might be reading this, yes I am that old. For those older, you have wisdom now; you understand.

I had to go back to my forgotten .mp3s when I found this review of the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe original motion picture soundtrack. Saying "it doesn’t help that Alanis Morissette can’t pronounce the word ‘wunderkind’ properly - it comes out as ‘wander’ (as in walk around aimlessly) and ‘kind’ (as in being nice to someone)", it’s safe to say the reviewer didn’t like the album.

I only had that  one song, Wunderkind, which Alanis supposedly wrote in the viewpoint of the youngest child in the film, Lucy. I did hear what he meant, but it’s OK. I still like the song. It’s probably cool to be some kind of wunderkind but I was not. I’m actually more of a late-bloomer in a lot of ways. Wait, that sounds too pretty. Make it slow learner.

I am a magnet for all kinds of deeper wonderment

I am a wunderkind  …

I am a princess on the way to my throne

destined to serve

destined to roam …

destined to seek

destined to know

Favorites: Book-to-Film Adaptations

March 4, 2008

1. Contact

  • Book: Science fiction novel by renowned  astronomer Carl Sagan (1985)

  • Film: Starring Jodie Foster and Matthew McConaughey; directed by Robert Zemeckis (1997)

* This is probably my most favorite movie of all time. I love everything about it - the visuals, the conflicts, the dialogues, and the denouement. It’s ironic that a genre I do not particularly follow will give me a movie that speaks, on so many levels, of how I view life, humanity, science, and faith. It doesn’t give answers and I believe that’s what it’s all about - that we continue finding them for ourselves.

Why I love it (movie): breathtaking images of outer space; intelligent discussions on mankind and the existence of higher power; nobody won

For Women Only [Updated]

March 3, 2008

Did you ever wish you would stop getting monthly periods and for reasons other than menopause or getting pregnant, which would do "weird" things to your body?

If your answer is yes, Saturday Night Live has cooked up  something for ya! Look to the right, a little lower in my sidebar, there’s a featured video. Wait for the written parts in the end, because those are the best!

I can’t make the screen appear in full or at least wider, so if you’re in need of some laughs, go to the official website to watch. Just do that double-click thing over the video.

Update:

I just discovered that this skit is actually a parody of an existing advertisement for a brand of birth control pills. The real commercial can be found here. To view the SNL skit in a large screen, click here

Oh, Brad

I was supposed to have my hair cut yesterday but it didn’t happen. So as I was surfing for hair styles online, I stumbled upon this photo of dad-to-be (again), Brad Pitt. Oh, to be a celebrity - every little thing this man does is a big deal, eh?!

Miscellaneous Links

March 1, 2008

To Harry from the monarchy: "You.make us.look good!" The soldier prince leaves Afghanistan.

Turning vegan? I can’t; but the veggie and occasional seafood recipes in this site made me want to run to the supermarket and start cooking and eating healthy.

Steffi Graf and Martina Navratilova will play an exhibition match in Tokyo on March 15, 2008. They will be joined by possibly the greatest Asian female tennis player ever, Kimiko Date. Wow.

Gossip and spies and everything nice - American Idol kids are feuding like cats and dogs. Why am I not surprised?

On March 17 and 18, Jason Robert Brown and Lauren Kennedy will perform The Last Five Years at Birdland in Manhattan with the original Off-Broadway orchestra. If you’re not geographically challenged, I suggest you go and see it. As for me, I’ll try to catch the farewell run of Avenue Q in June.

Big Book Blowout from National Bookstore is ongoing until March 30, 2008. Time magazine’s top 100 all-time novels might help you decide which one to buy.

Dreaming of Palawan

I love beaches; maybe because I grew up near one. When I was very young, the thing that excites me more than new toys or other "pasalubong" is going to the beach early in the morning before the sun rises. That was before our town gets progressive enough to pollute its waters. I don’t know how my former beach looks like now; it’s probably more like a wasteland already, having a public market installed near its shores.

My travel plans are very far in between these past few years, just when I’m old enough to go wherever I please. The irony hasn’t escaped me; I never stopped dreaming, though. One place that I’m really keen to visit is Palawan. Just looking at the pictures of its spectacular beaches takes my breath away. It looks so pristine; untouched even.

That’s why when Grace wrote about her trip to Coron, I’ve set my mind that this is my next place to be. She described it as "Paradise" and I cannot help believing her.  I have to go there and write poetry. Maybe I’ll even manage to draw or take great pictures. I’ll probably even write a song or sing one really well. I told you, I’m a dreamer. I’m borrowing a picture she took to explain why.

There. The mountains; the sky; the water.  It makes me feel so little, and yet never more alive.

Luck and Buck

Looking at my previous post, it occurred to me that I am an ignoramus in all things gambling. I cannot play poker or the simplest card game if my life depends on it. I don’t even understand how BINGO is played and I’ve never been inside a casino. I’ve been pestering my friends to "educate" me, for the love of knowledge (translation: in the hope of sudden and burdenless fortune).

I always come across sports betting whenever I follow tennis results. All these talks about bookmarkers and betting odds are perplexing to me. I was surprised to see that even American Idol is a very popular betting vehicle. There’s this site that reviews casino online and lists casinos with best bonuses, for anyone interested in this kind of stuff.

My friend calls BINGO a social game; therefore, it’s not gambling.  I don’t know; I rarely win even in the company annual Christmas raffle, not even with the least prizes (e.g., a basketful of groceries). I did manage to win an extra large shirt twice in badminton tournaments. I was happy enough for those even if  they fit like an ugly dress. Oh, well, I guess that’s just my luck.
