Street Tales

February 6, 2008

Sitting inside a jeepney, you know you’re not thinking about love when what reminds you of what February generally means is a large banner showing two faces of male politicians with a heart between each photo. The banner was hanging beside a tailor shop with red hearts pasted on the glass windows.

As if on cue, the old lady sitting in front of me started talking (not to me) about her beloved husband. How she had so many admirers but chose the one she instantly liked. I only needed a couple of minutes to hear a rather cute courtship tale before I reached my stop.

Walking toward the sidewalk, I noticed two police officers having a smoke. I took one look at the guns stuck by their waists and shivered a bit. I get paranoid about a lot of things. When one of them greeted me with a seemingly polite "Good morning, Ma’am," I had to acknowledge due to fear more than anything else. I felt a bit embarassed for being misanthropic. I thought about those little hearts on the glass windows and sang to myself’ "What the world needs now is love, sweet love. It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of."
