Spring Awakening

February 5, 2008

I wasn’t supposed to stay late today. Oh well, blame Spring Awakening.

I was surprised to learn that Duncan Shiek wrote the music. I meant that in a good way. The story was based on a 1891 German straight play of the same title, which was banned due to its controversial theme - as you may have guessed, teenage anxiety and discovery of sexual urges.

Here’s a video of the cast performing at the 2007 Tony Awards presentation

I’ve been far too removed from teenage angst and naivete to really be involved with the story but the cast was superb, the music is engaging, and the soundtrack is one that would occupy my mp3 player for some time.  I really can’t say how I managed to watch a video (blame geography), but if you’re anywhere near where it’s playing, giving up 2 hours of your time, and a few bucks, to watch might well be worth it.
